Cardinals Notch Win Number 700 in Program History

Houston, TX – It was a milestone day for the University of the Incarnate Word softball team as they notched win number 700 in program history on Saturday afternoon in a 4-3 victory over Houston Baptist at Husky Field.

The bats came alive for the Cardinals with a season high 13 hits as a team and UIW was able to hold off a late rally by the Huskies for the historic win. Joanna Valencia delivered an outstanding performance in the pitching circle going 7.0 innings while allowing two earned runs on five hits earning her third victory of the season.

Houston Baptist opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Kay Schroeder doubled to right field scoring Libby Brown. UIW answered in the third with a sacrifice fly from Christy Trevino, which scored Kellen Robles.

It was a pitchers duel in the middle innings with neither team scoring again until the seventh inning. Alex Alonzo singled to right field to give the Cardinals the lead in the top of the seventh scoring two runs. Later in the inning, Baily Thomas singled through the left side scoring Alonzo to give the Cardinals a 4-1 advantage.

The Husky would not go quietly with a rally in the bottom of the seventh and they did score two runs in the inning before Valencia was able to close out Houston Baptist 4-3.

At the plate, Victoria Bratcher and Delaney Guzman each had three hits while Marcela Lopez and Trevino each had two. Alonzo led the team with two RBI.

Kay Schroeder led the Huskies with three hits and one RBI. Shae Bibby is charged with the loss after coming in for Stephanie Buenrostro, who started the game for Houston Baptist.
