SAN ANTONIO –
Garrett Terrell hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth to give the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team a 7-5 win over Texas Southern on Tuesday evening at Sullivan Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (9-5) trailed 3-0 early in the ball game, but eventually tied it 5-5 in the eighth inning with two runs. Then with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Terrell connected with his first collegiate homerun to give the Cardinals their fourth consecutive victory.
The Tigers (2-10) jumped out on top in the first inning with three runs, but UIW answered with a run, when
Mark Whitehead scored after reaching base on a single, later stealing third base and eventually scoring on a balk. Then in the second inning, the Cardinals would cut the lead down to 3-2 when
Tanner White drove in
Ryan Gonzalez from third base, after hitting a triple to center field.
Austin Preiss worked 3.2 innings in relief and kept the Tigers off the board until the fifth inning when Olajide Oloruntimilehin hit a two-run homerun to extend the lead to 5-2. But the Cardinal bullpen then came in to shut the door.
Jenner Jackson and
Ramon Salazar combined to pitch 5.0 scoreless innings to give the Cardinals a chance.
In the eighth inning, a perfectly placed bunt from
Bryce Shepherd advanced the runners to second and third with one out. Then,
Ryan Gonzalez hit a hard groundball through the left side that brought in Terrell.
Tanner White followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to tie the game 5-5.
After a scoreless ninth from Salazar, the Cardinals had a runner on second and two outs when Terrell came up and hit a 2-0 fastball over the left field fence.
Salazar picked up with win after 2.2 great innings of work, allowing two hits, no runs and striking out two. He is now 2-1 on the year. The loss went to Ryan Hawkins after allowing the two-run homer.
The walk-off win is the third for the Cardinals this season.
