SAN ANTONIO, Texas – March is National Athletic Training Month and The University of the Incarnate Word Athletic Department is proud to recognize the important work of its athletic training staff.
Athletic Trainers are board certified experts, working to prevent and treat musculoskeletal injuries and sports-related illnesses. Cardinal athletic trainers offer an unparalleled continuum of care for all of the athletic department's Division I student-athletes.
Athletic trainers are an important component of a team of health care professionals at UIW. They practice under the direction of and in collaboration with physicians. Athletic trainers work with individuals who are physically active all stages of life, to prevent, treat and rehabilitate injuries and medical conditions. Athletic trainers should not be confused with personal trainers or trainers who focus solely on fitness and conditioning.
UIW employs nine athletic trainers to be present when injuries occur and provide immediate care. They rehabilitate athletes after injuries or surgery and maintain intensive care. Athletic trainers know their athletes well because they are at the university every day providing coverage for all workouts, practices and games.
The Cardinals board certified athletic trainers are led by Director of Sports Medicine
B.J. Lough and include
Eric Gillberg, Kimberly Hunt, LaTisha Johnson,
DonLouise Martens,
Chris Ramos,
Jerry Salazar, T. R. St. Charles and
Sergio Valverde.
Please help these nine professionals celebrate National Athletic Training Month throughout the month of March.
