Cardinals Complete Comeback in Last Home Game of the Year

SAN ANTONIO – After losing the doubles' point and the first two singles' matches, the University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis completed the terrific comeback over Nicholls to earn their first Southland Conference win of the season, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Clarence Mabry Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Colonels (5-8, 0-4 SLC) got off to a strong start taking the first two matches in doubles' play at the #2 and #3 courts, and were leading at #1 before ending the match early.

In singles they took the first two matches at #5 and #6 and looked to be on the driver's seat with four matches remaining and only needing one more win. The Cardinals (6-13, 1-2 SLC) though, had other plans in mind. Playing in their last home game of the season, they felt inspired by the rowdy crowd in the bleachers. Francisco Bendana won his match at #2 7-5, 6-0 to start the comeback. Ivanhoe Lissanevitch followed with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at #3 and Sebastian Mortier finished a strong showing by defeating his opponent at #1 6-3, 6-4. With that win, the match was all tied up 3-3, with the #4 match remaining as the decisive one. Joey Vatanadilok lost the first set 4-6, but came back to win the second set 6-0. The third set went back and forth and ended up 6-6 and needing a tiebreaker. Vatanadilok battled and came through for UIW winning the tiebreaker 7-5 and giving the home team a big conference win.
