INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Two members of the UIW fencing teams – junior
Alexander Sless and freshman
Myrka Boyd – will compete at the NCAA Division I Fencing Championships, slated for March 23-26 at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum and hosted by Notre Dame University.
UIW is one of 27 schools competing in the four-day event, including the No. 1 men's team in the nation, Ohio State, and the No. 1 women's squad, Princeton. Also participating is the world's No. 1 foilist in Notre Dame's Lee Kiefer.
Sless, the San Antonio native who competes in the epee, is no stranger to the big stage, as he was the first Cardinal in program history to reach the NCAA Championships last season.
Boyd, who hails from Corinth, Texas, won the foil competition at the West Regionals two weeks ago to earn a spot in the championships.
Thursday begins at 9 a.m. with rounds 1-3 in the men's foil, followed by the men's epee at 11 a.m., and the men's sabre at 1:30 p.m. Rounds 4-5 in all three weapons take place beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, with the semifinal and championship bouts taking place at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday marks the women's turn, as the first three rounds of the women's foil begins at 9 a.m., followed by the women's epee at 11 a.m., and the women's sabre at 1:30 p.m. Sunday features rounds 4-5 in the weapons at 9 a.m., followed by the semifinal and championship bouts at 1:30 p.m.
The six semifinal bouts will be fenced on one strip, followed by the three championship bouts. Bouts will be fenced sequentially in the order of epee, foil, and sabre.
A live feed of the semifinals and final bouts will be shown live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app. The semifinals and finals, along with other championship highlights, will air on ESPNU at 1:30 p.m. CST on April 5.
