STANFORD, Calif. - The Western Region held its qualifying tournament to select its representatives to the NCAA National Championships. Freshman
Myrka Boyd qualified to the championships, which are being held in Indianapolis, Ind., from March 21-26, 2017.

Two fencers in each weapon were selected as a result of the competition held on the campus of Stanford University on March 11th.

In women's foil, Boyd topped the field of 10 fencers to become UIW's first ever female representative to the NCAA National Collegiate Fencing Championships.

In the largest field of the day, Junior Alex Sless finished 4th out of 18. Freshman Thomas "TJ" Petrosewicz finished just behind Sless in 5th place.

In Men's foil
Renars Blumentals finished 9th in a field that contained Olympic Silver Medalist Alex Massialas of Stanford University.

Women's Sabre saw Alex Krick and Ana Gutierrez finish 10th and 11th respectively.

The last event of the day to finish was Women's Epee and saw junior
Monet Moreau 6th and sophomore
Isabella Peceli 8th.

UIW qualified eight athletes this year for post-season competition, up three from last year and only four from the maximum number of 12 athletes permitted to compete from each school.

"While some of the athletes were disappointed in their results, I was very, very proud of the effort they put forth," said head coach
