Junior Croatian gets three wins on the week

Frisco, TexasJunior Matea Zemunik of the UIW women's tennis team earned Southland Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week honors, announced by the league office on Tuesday.

"I feel honored and really happy," said Zemunik. "It is the result of my hard work. My team helped me. This award is not just for me, but for the team."

The Split, Croatia, native began the weekend with a come-from-behind victory against Trinity in the No. 1 spot. Zemunik took the singles match 6-2, 6-3 and also provided UIW with its lone doubles win over Trinity in 6-4 fashion.

Zemunik also won the only doubles match for the Cardinals in Friday's match against St. Edwards, sweeping the contest 6-0. She was up 7-5, 4-3 in her No. 1 singles match before the match was stopped.

The lone singles loss for her came against the nation's #51 Rosell Canudas of UTSA 1-6, 3-6.

"This award shows how hard Matea has worked," said UIW head coach Devin Wilke. "It reinforces what we've been working on and it shows her that it pays off."

The women will compete in three matches at the Air Force Academy in Colorado this weekend, beginning with Colorado State on Friday at 4 p.m. After playing Pacific on Saturday at noon, the Cardinals end the weekend against the host Falcons on Sunday at 5 p.m. All times are in Mountain Time.
