SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team dropped a tight friendly match against San Antonio FC, 2-1, on Friday at Toyota Field.
The match was part of UIW's spring practice schedule, and for SAFC, served as a preseason game in preparation for their United Soccer League season-opener on March 26 at Rio Grande Valley FC.
Neither team scored in the first half, but the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the 60
th minute when
Trinidad Luna crossed a ball into the box to find
Wouter Peters. Peters received the pass and slotted it in the near post from 12 yards out.
The lead didn't last long for the Cardinals though, as SAFC used two set pieces to tie the game and take the lead. Just 15 minutes after Peters' goal, SAFC's Ryan Roushandel scored the equalizer from inside the box after a set piece. A few minutes later, Devin Vega scored a penalty kick to give the home team the 2-1 victory.
Despite the loss, Head Coach
Vince Martinez was pleased with the result.
"This was a valuable experience for us," Martinez said. "We got to measure our players against a quality professional team. Overall, I thought the guys competed pretty well, and it was definitely a wonderful learning experience for the entire team."
