More School Records For Cardinals at The Star

FRISCO, Texas – UIW track and field set three new school records Friday, competing against 53 other teams at the Dunamis College Classic, held at the Ford Center at The Star, the practice facility for the Dallas Cowboys.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rainy Castaneda started the day off with a bang, breaking her own school record in the 3000m with a time of 9:56.47, finishing .01 from winner Taylor Anderson from Stephen F. Austin in a photo finish.

Not to be outdone, Garett Cortez also ran a splendid 3000m, finishing first overall with a time 8:30.42, with Jorge Quinterro following closely behind with an 8:32.96 mark. Cortez bettered his own PR by six seconds.

In the always exciting 60m dash, Andrew Leuthner finished a respectable 15th out of 68 runners with a time of 6.88, the third-fastest time in school history. He finished 10th out of collegiate-only runners. On the women's side, LaShawnda Simmons finished 27th at 7.88.

Keila Rodriguez finished sixth out of 37 runners in the women's mile with a 5:08.56. Rodriguez later placed fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:16.54, finishing behind teammate Dominique Allen's 2:16.42. On the flip side, Deion Hardy was runner up out of 53 runners with a time of 1:51.08, besting the school record by two seconds.

In the 400, Tiffany Mays (18th; 58.96) and Collin Sepulveda (22nd; 50.94) led the Cardinals. Spring Lucky-Dania earned a Top-30 performance in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.38. On the men's side, David Gallegos finished 33rd overall with an 8.89 clocking.

In the women's weight throw, Gabrielle Estrada finished 12th overall with a PR toss of 14.23m. Brianna Blagowsky earned a Top-15 placement with a 13.69 mark in her first attempt in the event. Blagowsky also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 10.27m.

Robert Allen earned a Top 10 finish in the men's weight throw with a toss of 14.40m.

Ashley Joyner's mark of 1.58m gave her a tie for sixth in the women's high jump, while in the long jump, Jane Arinze leapt to 5.45m, good for a tie for 11th. In the pole vault, Claire Woodson earned a Top-15 finish with a 3.30m mark.

UP NEXT

UIW takes two weeks off before competing in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Feb. 22-23 at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
