SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Director of Athletics Brian Wickstrom announced Monday that
Larry Kennan will not return as the University of the Incarnate Word's head football coach.
"I want to thank Coach Kennan for his six years of hard work on behalf of hundreds of student-athletes," Wickstrom said. "The UIW mission calls for respectful interaction that advances the discovery of truth, mutual understanding, self-realization and the common good. Coach Kennan fulfilled the mission and has set our program up for success at the highest level of college football."
The Cardinals finished their 2017 campaign with a 1-10 overall record and a 1-7 mark in Southland Conference play.
Kennan took the reins of the program in 2012 and quickly raised the profile of UIW football, helping lead the program through a successful transition from the NCAA Division II level to full NCAA Division I status as a member of the Southland Conference.
Kennan posted a pair of winning seasons over his tenure, finishing 6-5 in both 2013 and 2015. Under his leadership, the Cardinals saw three players reach the NFL ranks, as Cole Wick (Detroit Lions), Myke Tavarres (Philadelphia Eagles) and Alex Jenkins (New Orleans Saints) each signed to professional contracts.
A national search for Kennan's replacement will begin immediately.
