LIVE OAK, Texas – Junior
Deion Hardy became the first Cardinal to win two races in a season, as he led The University of the Incarnate Word men's cross country team to a first-place finish at the 12
th Annual UIW Invitational Saturday morning from Live Oak Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinal men ran away – pun intended – with the competition, as the guys finished with 15 points and a time of 2:10.27 in the 8k. Second place TCU finished with 50 points and a time of 2:17.59.
Hardy led the way with a time of 25:42.6, while last year's overall winner,
Garett Cortez, placed second with a 25:45.2. After two Texas A&M-Corpus Christi runners finished third and fourth, spots 5-14 all went to Cardinals:

Isaiah Murillo,
Louie Barba,
Israel Orihuela,
Sam Farrell,
Chris Winski,
Cesar Moreno, and
Jairo Cruces.

The women finished one point behind Corpus for second place with 28 points in the 6k, as
Emily Wilson once again led the charge, earning bronze overall (second among Division I runners) with a time of 22:35.4, just .03 shy of matching her personal record, set at Abilene Christian last month.
Danielle Martinez (4
th; 22:50.9) and
Keila Rodriguez (6
th; 22:52.8) followed close behind.
Elizabeth Alvarado (23:32.9) and
Megan Hernandez (23:51.1) earned Top 10 finishes, while
Katelyn Mead (23:52.8) just missed.
UP NEXT
UIW will take three weeks off to prepare for the Southland Conference Cross Country Championships, slated for Friday, Oct. 27 from the ACU Cross Country Course in Abilene, Texas. The women's 6k is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. with the men's 8k ready an hour later.
