San Antonio, Texas – The UIW football team hosted their annual awards banquet Friday evening from the Rosenberg Sky Room.
Head coach
Larry Kennan addressed the group, announced the yearly awards, and his staff introduced the team's 17 seniors in their respective positions.
"We've taken this team to new heights and with high academic standards," said Kennan. "We had 17 seniors and we held them to high expectations. All 17 will graduate by next December – 15 in May. That's pretty impressive. I'm so proud of these seniors and this team. I love these guys."
Senior safety
Trey Colbert was named the team's Special Teams Player of the Year. The Fort Worth, Texas, product earned Southland Conference Player of the Week honors after he broke a school record with two blocked punts against Stephen F. Austin on Oct. 29.
Senior inside linebacker
Josh Zellars was recognized as the team's Defensive Player of the Year. The team captain from Baytown, Texas, led the Cardinals with 87 tackles, 46 solo and 41 assisted. He had 2.5 tackles for a loss for 15 yards and one sack for 10 yards.
Senior quarterback
Trent Brittain earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades. The team captain from Eastland, Texas, threw for over 2,200 yards and completed nearly half of his pass attempts. He registered 18 touchdowns with a long of 83 yards. He averaged 207 yards a game through the air.
Senior inside linebacker
Michael Allen earned a special plaque commemorating his being named to the Allstate Good Works Team. Allen was featured at halftime of the Allstate Sugar Bowl last month.
"Next season is our first to compete for a Southland Conference championship," stated Kennan. "I tell you, it's going to be a dog fight and I've never been more excited for an upcoming season."
