FRISCO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word had two student-athletes win Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field year-end awards on Thursday.
Sarea Alexander (San Antonio/MacArthur HS) was named the Female Outstanding Field Athlete of the Year and
Dominique Allen was named the Female Freshman of the Year.
Defending her indoor title in the long jump, Alexander repeated her success at the outdoor meet with a school record leap of 20-4.5 despite heading into finals in sixth place. The San Antonio, Texas (MacArthur H.S.), native came back in the triple jump with a personal and school-record of 42-2.75 on her fifth jump to take runner-up honors.
Allen entered the conference meet ranked fourth in the 800 meters before she out-kicked the competition take first by .08 seconds. The Converse, Texas (Judson H.S.), native's time of 2:10.34 set a school record. She also ran the second leg on the team's 4x400 relay team that finished in fifth with the second-fastest time in school history (3:45.05).
Sam Houston State sophomore Jeffrey Moore was named Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year, while Abilene Christian junior Alexandria Hackett was chosen as female athlete of the year, the league office announced.
Moore was also named male outstanding runner while Northwestern State redshirt-senior jumper Emmanuel Williams claimed male outstanding field performer honors. New Orleans sprinter Michael Nicholls was named freshman of the year and Northwestern State junior George Flaviano garnered newcomer of the year honors. Stephen F. Austin head coach Phil Olson was tabbed Leon Johnson Men's Coach of the Year.
In addition to Hackett being tabbed female athlete of the year, NSU sprinter Jermeka McBride was named outstanding female track performer. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Hannah McWilliams was tabbed female newcomer of the year and Sam Houston State head coach Dave Self earned Southland Women's Coach of the Year.
The top-three finishers in each event at last weekend's outdoor championships earned All-Southland Conference honors. The winner earned first team honors, the second place finisher earned second team accolades while third place finishers were honored with third team awards.
The UIW men were led by
Jamarkese Williams (Temple/Temple HS) who earned third team all-conference honors in the high jump and 4x100-meter relay. Joining him on the relay team were
Kentonie Thomas (Pearland/Pearland HS),
Uchenna Nnaji (San Antonio/Marshall HS) and
Clinton Cole (Temple/Temple HS).
Alexander picked up first team honors in the long jump and second team honors in the triple jump. Allen was first team in the 800 meters while
Myah Antwi (Huntsville/Huntsville HS) was first team in the shot put.
Jasmine Waring (San Antonio/Randolph HS) earned second team honors in the high jump.
