MCKINNEY, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's golf team played well on Tuesday's Southland Conference championship final round, but came up a couple of strokes short of moving up in the standings. (Results)

Senior Austin Wylie (Boerne/Boerne HS) finished in a tie for ninth place overall after a 72-72-77=221 showing on the par-72, 7,219-yard Pete Dye Signature Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.  It tied the best individual finish for a Cardinal player since joining the Southland Conference prior to the 2013-14 season.  He was tied for third in the tournament standings with 11 total birdies.

The tournament was originally scheduled to be 18 holes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but weather concerns forced the conference to move up the tournament rounds.  On Tuesday, Kevin Smith (Corpus Christi/Incarnate Word Academy) and Scott Shaw (San Antonio/Churchill HS) each fired 1-over par rounds to lead the team to an even 300 score.  UIW finished with 905 strokes overall, just three shots out of sixth place.

McNeese State held off an early round charge from Sam Houston State to win the conference team title with 877 strokes.  They finished seven shots in front of Southeastern Louisiana and eight in front of Sam Houston State.  Lamar took fourth with 886 strokes and they were followed by Stephen F. Austin (893), Abilene Christian (902), New Orleans (903), UIW (905), Central Arkansas (906), Houston Baptist (916) and Nicholls (923).

McNeese State's Martin Eriksson won the individual title by seven strokes.  He shot a 7-under par after a 70-69-70 showing over the three rounds.  James Anstiss of Southeastern Louisiana and Andrew Ertel from Sam Houston State each finished the tournament at even-par to tie for second place.

The Cardinals have now finished for the season, their third as a member of NCAA Division I.
