FRISCO, TEXAS – The 2015-16 Southland Conference Men's Basketball all-conference teams were announced by the conference office Monday and University of the Incarnate Word seniors
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and
Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) were each honored after a vote by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Hittle was named all-conference second team while Badillo took home honorable mention honors. Hittle led the Cardinals with 16.2 points per game and 72 three-pointers. He was second on the team in rebounds (5.9/game), assists (67) and steals (34). He is ranked in the top 10 in the conference in points per game, three-pointers made, three-point percentage and field goal percentage. He was a Southland Conference honorable mention player last year.
Badillo earned his first all-conference award this year. He averaged 9.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game. He shot a team high 43.0 percent from three-point range and added 51 steals, tops on the team and fifth in the conference. He set a career high in assists this season with 138.
Stephen F. Austin's Thomas Walkup was named the league's player of the year for a second straight season. Among the league's other postseason award winners are Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior forward Rashawn Thomas, who was named the defensive player of the year, Abilene Christian rookie guard Jaylen Franklin, who was picked as the freshman of the year, Central Arkansas junior guard Derreck Brooks, who was tabbed as the newcomer of the year, and Stephen F. Austin mentor Brad Underwood, who was selected as the coach of the year.
