HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word track and field teams broke two more school records on Friday night at the 34
th Annual Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice University.
The UIW men and women each set one school record in the first day of competition. The first record came in the men's 5,000 meters. Freshman
Garett Cortez (Schertz/Steele HS) and senior
Mario Mora (Converse/Wagner HS) both eclipsed the previous school record and it was Cortez who won the race in a time of 14:47.89. Mora finished third in a time of 14:50.03. The second record came in the last event of the day, the women's 10,000 meters. Sophomore
Katelyn Mead (Costa Mesa, CA/Newport Harbor HS) finished second in a time of 37:38.62 and freshman
Emily Wilson (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) also beat the previous school record with a time of 37:50.00.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase,
Adam Herrera (Edinburg/Vela HS) and
Stephanie Diaz (El Paso/Chapin HS) each put their names in the UIW top ten lists. Herrera was just seven seconds off the school record as he ran a time of 9:35.98 in his first attempt at the event. Diaz ran a time of 11:31.91 and was right behind teammate
Lindsey Frost (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) who crossed the line in 11:28.63.
In the 1500 meters, freshman
Dominique Allen (Converse/Judson HS) ran her fastest time of the year in 4:49.19 and fellow freshman
Katherine Ramirez (Alice/Alice HS) did the same thing with a time of 4:50.69. In the men's 1500 meters,
Deion Hardy finished second in a time of 3:55.12 while running unattached since he is red-shirting the outdoor season.
The meet concludes on Saturday with the majority of the events being contested.
