UIW Student-Athletes Volunteer at Seton Home

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – On Friday, February 19 the University of the Incarnate Word track and field team visited and helped out at the San Antonio Seton Home.

The Seton Home is a home for girls ages 12-17 who, in most cases, have been removed from their homes by Child Protective Services due to abuse, neglect, or sexual assault, and are also pregnant and/or parenting a child. The home provides therapy, counseling, parenting, life skills, educational services, job readiness training, on-site childcare, spiritual and moral guidance, and individualized treatment plans.

The UIW track team, under the direction of Coach Derek Riedel and Coach Rosemary Dupree, helped out at Seton Home by providing their services around the facilities. They helped install speed limit signs, painted walk ways, painted hand rails, picked up trash, pumped air into bikes, and organized the home's donation area.

Rebecca Vance, Development Coordinator for Seton Home said this about the team, "Seton Home is so grateful to the student athletes of UIW!  In only three hours they accomplished what would have taken our staff an entire week!  This amazing group dug post holes for our speed limit signs, treated and finished a wooden ramp leading to an office building, sorted donations, picked up litter around campus, and put air in all of our bike tires for our residents!  Accomplishing these tasks means making our campus safer for our young moms, their babies, and our staff; it means getting our residents the items they need more efficiently; and it means a beautiful campus for our moms to exercise and enjoy this wonderful weather!  We loved having them here, and look forward to the next time!"

The UIW track and field team has put in over 900 hours of community service since August 2015, and looks forward to a visit to the local food pantry this Friday. The UIW track and field team continues to embody the mission of UIW and serve the San Antonio community.
