ATHENS, GEORGIA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's swimming and diving teams got off to great starts at the 2016 CCSA Swimming and Diving Championships at the University of Georgia's Gabrielson Natatorium on Wednesday. (

The UIW men are in first place and the women are in third place after the first day of competition. The Incarnate Word men opened the meet by winning the 800-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of
Beau Fusilier (Georgetown/Home School),
Kyrylo Shvets (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Kharkiv SSS),
John Hennessy (San Antonio/Home School) and
Connor Hennessy (San Antonio/Business Careers HS) touched the wall in 6:33.10, a new school record and a little more than a second in front of UMBC.
The Cardinals added a solid fifth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. William Fussell (Deer Park/Deer Park HS),
Andrii Chechelnytskyi (Lugansk, Ukraine/LOVUFK),
David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) and
Kaulen Applin (Houston/MacArthur HS) finished in 1:30.58 while Gardner-Webb won the event in 1:27.72.
UIW added 79 points in the 1-meter springboard.
Brendan Schaffer (Charlotte, NC/South Mecklenburg HS) led the way with a fourth place showing with a tally of 253.95 points. Overall, the team has 193 points putting them right in front of Old Dominion (189) and UMBC (180). Florida Atlantic is fourth with 136 points and they are followed by NJIT (125), Gardner-Webb (114), Howard (92) and VMI (88).
The Incarnate Word women picked up 169 points and are in third place. The 200-yard medley relay team of
Dariia Bielousova (Kiev, Ukraine/School #133),
Daria Makieieva (Mariupol, Ukraine/Olimpic Reserve of Sergey Bubka),
Lexie Farmer (Boerne/Champion HS) and
Mariana Olguin (Toledo, Brazil/Colegio Newton Guimaraes) finished in fifth place with a time of 1:44.20. The 800-yard freestyle relay team added an eighth place finish.
In the 3-meter springboard,
Kimberly Foster (Spring/Oak Ridge HS) and
Mallory Draper (Victoria/Victoria West HS) took third and fourth place, respectively. Foster earned 243.05 points and Draper had 239.60 points.
Courtney Gay chipped in with an eighth place result.
Florida Gulf Coast leads the women's meet with 189 points and they are followed by Liberty (179), UIW (169), Georgia Southern (163), Gardner-Webb (106), Campbell (98), UNC-Asheville (94), North Florida (90), Howard (80), VMI (66) and North Carolina A&T (66).
The meet picks up again on Tuesday with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.
