The UIW women's team set a pair of school records and a number of other personal records on the day. Junior
Myah Antwi (Huntsville/Huntsville HS) surpassed 45 feet in the shot put for the first time in her career and set a new school record with a mark of 45-2.5. Later in the day, senior
Rainy Castaneda (Laredo/United South HS) ran her best time ever in the 3000 meters and set the school record with a time of 5:03.68.
"Rainy ran a fantastic race in the mile," said UIW head coach
Derek Riedel. "Her mile speed shows she is ready for her signature 5k event at conference. I am very happy with
Ashley Joyner's (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) new personal record in the high jump (5-5). Myah continues to impress with her continued development in the shot."
"The women's DMR ran well with three freshmen and a sophomore. They are going to be strong contenders in two weeks."
The Incarnate Word men set three school records and had two more results that were the second best in school history.
Ryan Haese (San Antonio/Antonian HS) shattered the school mark in the heptathlon to start things off and scored 4,604 points to take sixth place. Freshman
Robert Allen (San Antonio/Brackenridge HS) broke his own school record in the triple jump and finished in fourth place with a leap of 48-0.5.
On the track,
Deion Hardy (Temple/Temple HS) ran down the school record in the mile with a time of 4:19.56. Fellow freshman
Garett Cortez (Schertz/Steele HS) ran the school's second best time in the 3000 meters with a time of 8:45.68. In the field,
Andres Garcia (San Antonio/Harlandale HS) tossed the shot put 48-3.5, the second best in the program's history.
"Our men had a good overall meet," said Riedel. Clint Cole (Temple/Temple HS) and
Uchenna Nnaji (San Antonio/Marshall HS) flexed their muscle and showed that despite being new to the college level they will be ready for conference. The men's 3k was strong with
Garett Cortez,
Adam Herrera (Edinburg/Vela HS) and Mario Mario (Converse/Wagner HS) setting nice personal records."
"
Robert Allen's school record in the triple jump was fun to watch. He's really rounding into form.
Deion Hardy set a new school record in the mile. What is exciting about his development in the mile is how raw he is in the event. He's learning to run it at the D1 level after only running it a couple times in high school. We can't forget about
Ryan Haese's big school record in the heptathlon. His positive attitude is a great blessing to the team."
The Cardinals are now off until the Southland Conference Indoor Championships at Birmingham, Alabama on February 15-16.
