CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word tennis teams sent athletes to a pair of tournaments this weekend. The big winners for the Cardinals were the doubles team of
Josip Smoljan and Sebastian Mortier who won the Marco and Co. Catering Islander Open on Saturday.
The UIW duo won three matches to secure the doubles title. They opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Pablo Colvee of UT-Arlington and Andres Hernandez of UT Rio Grande Valley. They followed that by blanking the top seeded team from UT-Arlington, Carlos Arbiza and Mario Muniesa. In the final, they had to win a tie-break over UTRGV's Juan Cruz Soria and Koby Jensen, 7-1.
In singles play, Mortier and
Joey Vatanadilok each won their first round match before falling in their second round matches.
The UIW women were held without a victory at the tournament hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The UIW men also sent a number of players to the Trinity Quad tournament.
Ryan Hoverson and Zachary Vander Heiden both picked up a singles victory while losing two others in the third set tie-break.
The men are back in action on October 3 at the San Antonio Country Club mixer while the women will compete at the St. Mary's Tournament next weekend.
