Track Closes Season at Conference Meet

HAMMOND, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word closed out their track season on Sunday at the 2015 Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University.  (Results)

The UIW women finished in 11th place with 27.5 points while the men took ninth place with 31 points.  The Cardinals notched a trio of third place finishes on the final day of the meet to get up on the medal stand.  Freshman Jamarkese Williams (Temple/Temple HS) picked up the bronze medal in the high jump when he cleared a personal best 6-9.  Moments later, he led off the men's 4x100-meter relay team that took third in a time of 40.39.  Williams was joined by Jordan Epps (Grand Prairie/Bishop Dunne HS), Randalle Williams-Diaz (Aubrey/Ryan HS) and Chris DeWitt (San Antonio/Churchill HS).  Williams was the top point-getter for the men with 12.5 points in the meet.

Junior Rainy Castaneda (Laredo/United South HS) earned a bronze medal in the women's 5,000 meters.  She ran her second fastest time ever, 17:38.33, in difficult conditions and nearly caught the second place finisher at the line.  She earned 10 points in all for the team.

Jasmine Waring (San Antonio/Randolph HS) and Ashley Joyner (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) each scored in a pair of individual events.  Waring took fifth in the 200 meters in a time of 24.33 and tied for eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 5-5.25.  Joyner was eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 58.36 and set a personal record in the high jump with a height of 5-5.25 to take fifth place on misses.

The women's 4x100-meter relay team added a seventh place finish and the 4x400 team took eighth.  Emma Jewell (San Antonio/Taft HS) chipped in with an eighth place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:43.80.

The men's team picked up points in a variety of events.  In addition to Williams, Epps ran well in the 100 meters finishing in sixth place in a personal best time of 10.55.  Freshman Deion Hardy (Temple/Temple HS) added a fifth place in the 1500 meters with his best time of the year, 3:56.40.  Rounding out the scoring for the team was the pole vault where Eduardo Alexander (Austin/Bowie HS) was sixth and Wiley Saavedra (El Paso/Hanks HS) was eighth.  Alexander cleared 15-7.75 while Saavedra went over 14-10.

Stephen F. Austin won the women's team title with 148 points and they were trailed closely by Sam Houston State with 143.5 points.  Northwestern State (90) was third and they were followed by Lamar (84), McNeese State (82), Abilene Christian (59), Southeastern Louisiana (48), A&M-Corpus Christi (45), Houston Baptist (36), New Orleans (29), UIW, Central Arkansas (14) and Nicholls (11).

SFA also won the men's team title with 153.5 points and Sam Houston was the runner-ups with 139.5 points.  Southeastern Louisiana was third with 119.5 points and they were followed by Abilene Christian (85), Lamar (62), Central Arkansas (60), Northwestern State (59.5), McNeese State (54), UIW, Houston Baptist (26), New Orleans (15) and A&M-Corpus Christi (12).
