Cardinals in Form at Victor Lopez Invitational

HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word track and field teams had their collective best performances of the season over the weekend at the Victor Lopez Invitational hosted by Rice University. (Results)

The UIW women finished in fifth place with 58 points while the men took seventh with 43.5 points.  The Cardinals set three school records on Saturday and had a number of top performances.  "I'm very proud of the effort and determination our team showed this weekend," said UIW head coach Derek Riedel.  "We didn't have a perfect meet, but we had numerous personal and season bests among several strong school records. The team is rounding into form and looking stronger every week as we get closer to conference."

Myah Antwi (Huntsville/Huntsville HS) was the top field event performer for the UIW women.  She set a school record in the shot put when she broke her own mark with a toss of 44-11 to take third place.  She was also sixth in the discus with a toss of 137-3 which was the second best throw in school history.  In addition to Antwi, the Cardinals took fifth and sixth, respectively, in the high jump as Jasmine Waring (San Antonio/Randolph HS) and Ashley Joyner (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) each cleared 5-4.25.

In addition to her high jumping, Joyner set a personal record in the 400 meters.  She crossed the line in 56.48 to take sixth place and is now ranked fourth in the Southland Conference in the event.  Fellow freshman Krista Andreassen (San Antonio/Johnson HS) shattered the school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.62, the first time a UIW runner broke 2:20 in the event.  Later in the day Andreassan took sixth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:44.37, right behind teammate Emma Jewell (San Antonio/Taft HS) who was fifth in 4:44.16.

The top performances for the UIW men came on the track.  Senior Chris DeWitt (San Antonio/Churchill HS) ran the open 400 meters for the first time in his career and nearly broke the school record.  He finished fourth in a time of 48.27 that was just 0.02 off the school mark.  In the 800 meters, freshmen Deion Hardy (Temple/Temple HS) and Joshua LeCesne (Humble/Summer Creek HS) each set personal records.  Hardy ran a time of 1:53.50 and LeCesne finished in 1:56.61.  Hardy also broke four minutes in the 1500 for the second time this year with a mark of 3:59.35.

Junior Charles Hall (San Antonio/St. Anthony's HS) broke the school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.55 to finish in sixth place.

Freshman Austin Sandoval (Crane/Crane HS) had a big day.  He set personal records in the 200 and 400 meters and anchored the 4x400 relay team that took fourth.  He was fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.76 and he ran a time of 49.87 in the 400 meters.  He brought the 4x400 team home in a time of 3:14.97.

The Cardinals return home this weekend for the annual UIW Invitational at Benson Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Jamarkese Williams (Temple/Temple HS), Jordan Epps (Grand Prairie/Bishop Dunne HS), Randalle Williams-Diaz (Aubrey/Ryan HS) and DeWitt won the meet with a time of 40.65.  It was the second fastest time in school history and it is the fastest time in the Southland Conference this year.
