UIW Finishes Sixth

MCKINNEY, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word closed out the 2015 Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship with their best round of the tournament and finished in sixth place at the 54-hole event played at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club Dye Course. (Results)

The Cardinals fired a 309 on the 7,346-yard, par-72 course and had four of their five players post their best round of the tournament.  UIW was neck-and-neck with Abilene Christian throughout the tournament and the two schools played all three rounds together.  In the end, the Wildcats edged them by one stroke 931 to 932 as the two second-year NCAA Division I programs took fifth and sixth, respectively.

While the Cardinals finished one stroke behind ACU, they were able to pass Stephen F. Austin on the final hole of the tournament.  UIW senior Austin Jordan (Rainbow/Glen Rose HS) was the final player on the course for either team and he birdied his final hole of the day, the par-4, 463-yard ninth hole.  It pushed UIW into sixth place all by themselves, one stroke ahead of the Lumberjacks.

Jordan finished in a tie for ninth place with a 74-76-74=224.  Fellow senior Chris Martinez (McAllen/McAllen HS) had the lone sub-par round for the tournament for UIW when he shot a 2-under par in the second round and he finished in a tie for 14th with a 78-70-79=227.

Sam Houston State rallied in the final round to edge McNeese State to claim the 2015 conference title.  The Bearkats had four golfers place in the top 12 to claim their second consecutive league title and fourth overall.  They fired a 5-over par 293 in the final round to win by two strokes over the Cowboys.  Sam Houston State shot a 288-300-293=881 total.  The Bearkats claimed the league's automatic berth into one of six NCAA regionals, May 14-16.

On Wednesday, Sam Houston senior J.T. Taylor carded a 1-under par 71 to give him a three-round total of 2-under par 213 to help him lay claim to the individual medalist honors.  Taylor was the only player to shoot par or better in all three rounds and became the eighth Bearkat to win medalist honors.  Central Arkansas' Pep Angles finished in second just one shot behind Taylor while Lawrence Allan (Southeastern Louisiana) and Martin Eriksson (McNeese State) tied for third at 3-over par.

Southeastern Louisiana (919) finished third and they were followed by Lamar (924), Abilene Christian (931), UIW (932), Stephen F. Austin (933), Houston Baptist (936), Nicholls (943), New Orleans (952) and Central Arkansas (954).
