LAWRENCE, KANSAS – The University of the Incarnate Word track and field team made their first ever appearance at the Kansas Relays on Thursday at Rock Chalk Park.
The Cardinals did not have a great day overall, but they did have a few top performances. Junior
Rainy Castaneda (Laredo/United South HS) shattered the school record and dominated a large field of 23 runners in the 5,000 meters. She crossed the finish line in 17:21.00 more than 15 seconds in front of the second place runner and more than 22 seconds better than the school record. Teammate
Katelyn Mead (Newport, CA/Newport Harbor HS) also set a personal record in the event and finished sixth in a time of 18:15.10.
UIW had a pair of runners finish in the top five in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Emma Jewell (San Antonio/Taft HS) was the runner-up in the race clocking a time of 11:04.98 while
Lindsey Frost (Portland/Gregory-Portland HS) was fifth in a personal record time of 11:25.13.
Due to weather concerns, the meet is condensing from the original schedule of Friday and Saturday and will now run all the events on Friday to allow all athletes a chance to compete.
