Kennan Enthused About Spring Game

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – University of the Incarnate Word head football coach Larry Kennan was excited following the team's annual Spring football game on Saturday evening at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals alternated between going full 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 and they ran a total of 38 plays in a full scrimmage mode.  In addition, the special teams went through kickoff and punt situations.  "I love our guys' attitude and enthusiasm," said Kennan.  "We are a lot better than we have been.  They look better, they act better and they play better than in the past.  It has been a very successful Spring."

One of the players that most people were looking to see was quarterback Trent Brittain who went down in the first quarter of the season opener in 2014 with a broken ankle.  Brittain ran a total of 20 plays versus a full defense.  After a slow beginning he started to click with his receivers and on his final play he threw a beautifully lofted 40-yard touchdown pass to Kody Edwards.  Brittain finished 4-of-9 for 74 yards and a touchdown.

"Trent has grown a lot in the last year from the experience of watching," said Kennan.  "He is a student of the game and is intent on it.  He is way further along than last year and we are so excited to have him back."

Kennan was also happy with how the defense played.  In the 11-on-11 part of the scrimmage, the defense came up with an interception and had four sacks.  "We have been emphasizing getting turnovers on defense because that was something we struggled with last year," added the coach.  "We were able to get a couple of interceptions and forced a fumble so that was a good thing."

The Cardinals have a few more practices next week before their Spring season is over.  They open the 2015 season at home against Texas A&M-Kingsville on September 5.
