ROCKWALL, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word swimming teams sent a large contingent to the second annual CSCAA Invitational hosted by the Rockwall ISD Aquatic Center starting on Monday.
In the first day of competition, senior
Lana Nguyen (Kiev, Ukraine/NPD) and junior
Connor Hennessy (San Antonio/Business Careers HS) led the UIW women's and men's teams, respectively. Nguyen closed out a brilliant career in the 50-yard freestyle by winning the event in a personal record time of 22.86, the fourth best time in school history. Hennessy won the 500-yard freestyle by over four seconds in a time of 4:25.15, the ninth best in school history.
The UIW women had a pair of runner-up performances on the opening day of competition. Freshman
Alona Kyselova (Kiev, Ukraine/Tarasa Shevchenko) swam the top preliminary time in the 200-yard individual medley and took second place in the final with a time of 2:00.58, just off her own school record. Kyselova and Nguyen swam the final two legs on the team's 400-yard medley relay team. Abby Meyer (Austin/Bowie HS) and
Daria Makieieva (Mariupol, Ukraine/Olimpic Reserve of Sergey Bubka) swam the first two legs on the relay and the squad took second in a time of 3:48.12 which was the third fastest in school history.
The UIW men also had a pair of runner-up finishes. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Alex Brouwer (Scottsdale, AZ/Notre Dame Prep),
Mehdi El Hazzaz (Casablanca, Morocco/Al Jabr),
Jorge Escarcega (El Paso/Cathedral HS) and
Kaulen Applin (Houston/MacArthur HS) grabbed second place with a time of 1:22.88. Sophomore
David Moore (San Antonio/Marshall HS) was edged out in the 200-yard individual medley where he was second in a time of 1:47.75.
David Santos (McAllen/Lamar Academy) added a fourth place finish in the 500-yard freestyle for the Cardinals.
The meet continues today and through Wednesday and is the final competition of the year for UIW. All swimmers had to achieve qualifying times during the year to be eligible for the CSCAA Invitational.
