SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After an impressive showing in the 96-59 victory against LSU- Alexandria on Friday night, University of Incarnate Word women's basketball player Melina Merritt has been named Madness Southland Women's basketball player of the week.
         
Merritt (Round Rock/ Cedar Ridge HS), a sophomore point guard, led the Cardinals with 21 points going 6-of-10 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. She also added 10 assists to complete the double-double and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Cardinals to victory.  

Last season, Merritt appeared in 24 games and made seven starts as a true freshman.  The 21 points and 10 assists she had against LSU-Alexandria were both career highs.

Merritt and the Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at 6 p.m. at home against Sul Ross State.
