Myke Tavarres (Lake Oswego, OR/Lake Ridge HS) earned the Southland Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week honors presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Monday.
Tavarres was the leader of the UIW defense with a team-high 11 tackles in the Cardinals' 25-20 win against Abilene Christian. The outside linebacker had a season high 4.5 tackles for loss, including 1.5 sacks as well as 11 tackles. He also had two quarterback hurries and a pass breakup in the win.
Tavarres leads the nation with 18.5 tackles for loss on the season and with 2.64 tackles for loss per game. The 18.5 tackles for loss are a new school record. He also has 6.5 sacks which is tied for the school single season record. Tavarres and the Cardinals are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Stephen F. Austin for a 3 p.m. kickoff.
