Cardinals Take Flight

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team improved to 2-0 at home in Southland Conference action on Saturday with an impressive 82-70 win over visiting Southeastern Louisiana at the McDermott Center.

The Cardinals (5-10, 2-2) trailed for a total of 17 seconds in the game as they shot a season high 50 percent from the field.  An early 10-2 run gave UIW a double-digit lead midway through the first half.  The Lions (6-10, 2-3) pulled to within five points on a few occasions in the first half, but UIW took a 37-27 lead into halftime.

In the second half, the Cardinals immediately went up by 14 points before the Lions closed to within five points thanks to an 11-2 run.  The Cardinals maintained a 5-to-8 point lead for the next several minutes before exploding on a 14-0 run.  UIW would then push the lead to 20 points after a conventional three-point play by Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) with 4:47 remaining.

The Lions were not finished though and made the game interesting with a 13-1 run.  SLU got to within seven points, but the Cardinals were able to salt the game away at the foul line as Aricka Adams (Round/Round Rock HS) went 7-for-8 in the final 47 seconds of the game.

The Cardinals shot 50 percent from the field, made 5-of-10 from three-point range and were 21-of-29 at the foul line.  Adams had her best game of the season with 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists.  Maosa had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.  Breanna Birmingham (Battle Creek, MI/Harper Creek HS) added 16 on 7-of-10 shooting and five rebounds off the bench.  Freshman point guard Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Bowie HS) had a strong game with seven points, six steals and five assists.  The team has seven fewer rebounds and two fewer turnovers than the Lions.

The Lions shot 39.7 percent from the field, went 5-of-18 from three-point range and they were 11-of-20 at the foul line.  Elizabeth Styles had 21 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds as she nearly posted a triple-double.  Erica Hernandez, Nanna Pool and Peaches Anderson each scored in double figures.
