DENVER, COLORADO – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team had four players selected to all-Western Athletic Conference teams the league announced on Wednesday night.
The Cardinals had a successful first season in the WAC going 6-3-1 and finishing in third place in the regular season. Senior midfielder Alex de la Garza (Mission/Sharyland HS) earned first team honors while junior forward
Dylan Kelly (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe Catholic HS), junior defender
Jonathan Camarena (El Paso/Del Valle HS) and sophomore defender
Joe Brown (Nottingham, Eng./The Becket School) were all named to the second team.
De la Garza leads the Cardinals with 17 points on the season. He has scored five goals and handed out a team high seven assists with one game remaining. He has started all 18 games on the season and played 1,486 minutes. He had a goal or an assist in seven of 10 conference matches and scored game-winning goals at Houston Baptist and against Grand Canyon.
Kelly battled through injuries late in the season, but still managed to score six goals and pass out three assists. The Academic All-District VII first team choice put 21 of 33 shots on goal and was a key reason for the team's success in conference play.
Camarena and Brown headlined a UIW defense that allowed 26 goals in 18 games including four shutouts in conference play. Brown leads the team in minutes played and has scored one goal and Camarena is third on the team in minutes played and has an assist.
The Cardinals close out their season on Friday when they play Omaha in Phoenix, Arizona at 7 p.m.
